Intel Core i9-12900HX CPU with 16 cores will be the flagship of Intel’s new top-of-the-line mobility lineup. Silently Intel was working on this project. The information about this chip has now been leaked and benchmarked. On the Geekbench database, it has the first benchmarks.
Intel Alder Lake Core i9-12900HX CPU with 16 Cores for Mobile Platform
The new Intel Core i9-12900HX CPU with 16-cores (in an 8+8 configuration) will be the first chip for Intel that offers such a high core count on the laptop segment. According to the leaks, the laptop in the benchmark is the upcoming Lenovo 82TD. According to CPU specs, this laptop will be an absolute beast in terms of rendering and gaming performance. Until now, the crown of 16 core laptops belongs to AMD, those were based on desktop parts and not mobile chips.
The packaging of Intel’s new Alder Lake-HX series processors will be in the BGA format and multiple sources claim that this is actually the full desktop die. According to the sources, it has optimized voltages so that power is protected and tuned for maximum performance/efficiency on laptops. Compared to the existing Core i9-12900HK which provides a configuration of 14-cores and 20-threads, the new CPU will offer a higher core and thread count. So that’s a 2 cores (14%) increase in core & 4 threads (20%) increase in the thread count.
The base clock for the new Intel Core i9-12900HX will be set at 2.5 GHz and a boost clock as high as 4.89 GHz. It is assumed that the chip will boost up to 5.0 GHz upon authorized release due to any earlier testing regarded as preparatory in practice.
Lenovo’s new laptop will support NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti laptop GPU, considered the most efficient mobile graphics card on the market. The GeForce RTX 3080 Ti uses the latest NVIDIA GA103 GPU.
All the Alder Lake-HX series, including the 12900HX and 12650HX models, will deliver a high base power, or TDP, of 55W. The chip’s silicon is based on the 16-core desktop Alder Lake series and it offers up to 32 Xe-LP GPU cores, much less than the desktop offering. However, this is insignificant with the processor aimed at premium gaming systems.
With 1921 points in Geekbench 5 single-core test, the new i9-12900HX is pretty fast. In the same test, the multicore score was 15974 points. Right now the i9-12900HK processor is not yet part of the official Geekbench charts because of this the average score for the chip is unknown, it is at least 10% faster than the Core i9-12900H which has 14 cores and 20 threads.
With the desktop i9-12900KS, Intel plans to release the i9-12900HX integrated into mobile systems. The KS series is a pre-binned desktop CPU with more boost clocks as high as 5.5 GHz. AMD already gives Intel a huge beating in the power consumption segment. Now the main concern for such chips would be their power consumption. With this powerful chip, the laptops would require to be plugged in almost all of the time, especially with that RTX 3080 Ti GPU comes in the same package.
