On March 21st, AMD launched its first data-center processor MILAN-X series featuring 3D V-Cache. AMD is pledging some big performance increases with its 3D V-cache CPUs. In the form of a 3D die, AMD is basically adding an L3 cache (SRAM) chiplet on top of the current Zen 3 chiplet. With the help of this, the V-cache CPUs will have triple the amount of L3 cache. AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D was the first AMD CPU that supports 3D V-cache memory. Now with this release of EPYC 7003X Milan-X server CPUs, AMD is finally making V-cache available to a wider range of products.
AMD’s new Milan-X CPUs are upgraded versions of its existing 3rd-gen Milan-based CPUs. Large 768MB L3 cache is one of the most significant improvements with the new CPUs using AMD’s 3D V-cache stacking technology. The new chips come with PCIe 4.0 128 lanes waiting to be used via full-length PCIe 4.0 slots and controllers selection. The chips also come with four memory controllers which support two DIMMs per controller and it opens as many as eight channels for DDR4 memory.
AMD EPYC Milan-X processors
With 64 Zen 3 cores and 128 threads, the EPYC 7773X is at the top-of-the-line SKU. It has a base frequency of 2.2GHz and a max boost frequency of 3.5GHz. The EPYC 7573X stands 3rd in the line which has 32-cores, 64 threads, and a 768MB cache. According to AMD, all four EPYC 7003-X chips will consume between 225 and 280W of power.
With capacities of up to 4 TB per chip, the new AMD EPYC 7003-X chip supports eight DDR4-3200 memory modules per socket. It is also worth pointing out that the new AMD Milan-X EPYC server chips are compatible with current LGA 4094 motherboards, and they’ll be enabled via a firmware update by the vendors. This means you don’t need a new motherboard, it is a plus point for AMD.

AMD’s EPYC 7003-X CPUs are now available to the public. The AMD EPYC 7773X will cost around $8800 and the EPYC 7573X will be available for about $5590. These prices are listed on a 1K unit order basis, so the per-unit price could be a little higher. These new CPUs will soon be available to buy as a part of some pre-built machines from OEM partners like Dell, Lenovo, and HP.
