AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs will only support DDR5 memory on the AM5 platform, and it comes with EXPO ‘Memory Profile’ Technology.

AMD hinted in the past that the AM5 platform and the Ryzen 7000 CPUs will be based on the DDR5 memory standard. More recently, during the Meet The Experts webinar, AMD’s representatives confirmed that the codename for Ryzen 7000 CPUs is Raphael which is based on Zen 4 core architecture, it will be their first DDR5 gaming platform. Users which are using DDR4 memory will have to say goodbye when transferring to the new AM5 platform.

In the report where Tomshardware talked about the X670 chipset being a dual-chiplet design, the tech outlet says that AMD’s X670 and B650 chipset-powered motherboards will support DDR5 Memory Only. There might be some assumption that a lower-tier A620 chipset will support DDR4 memory, but that won’t be the case since the leaked AM5 feature compatibility list proves that the socket will only be compatible with DDR5 memory, and there is no mention of DDR4 memory support.

Its good news for those who are looking ahead to upgrading their rig as DDR5 prices continue to drop & availability is just so much better than what it was a few months back during Intel’s 12th Gen Alder Lake launch, thanks to AMD for moving to DDR5 in the second half of the year 2022. However, the blue team is giving their users the option to choose between both DDR5 and DDR4. AMD might be in a difficult situation because they won’t have a higher-end option that comes with DDR4 memory support and users will have to spend much higher prices to jump onboard the new standard.

Expect the DDR5, AMD’s AM5 platform for Ryzen 7000 CPUs is also expected to come with new technologies. One of these technologies has been detailed by Videocardz. Known as EXPO (Extended Profiles For Overclocking), with help of this new feature AM5 motherboards can store two memory overclocking profiles which include:

  • An optimized profile for high-bandwidth (Higher Frequency)
  • An optimized profile for low-latency (Tighter CAS Timings)

AMD EXPO (Extended Profiles For Overclocking) will be capable to work with UDIMM, RDIMM, and SO-DIMM which unlocks the tech for use in mobile platforms too. Now what isn’t known is whether this technology is an extension for RAMP (Ryzen Accelerated Memory Profile) which was previously said to be coming to the new AMD CPU platforms or it will replace that.

Our first DDR5 platform for gaming is our Raphael platform and one of the awesome things about Raphael is that we are really gonna try to make a big splash with overclocking and I’ll just kinda leave it there but speeds that you maybe thought couldn’t be possible, maybe possible with this overclocking spec.

It looks like the AMD would just end up using this name because the trademark does reveal that it was filed recently (in February). Particular monitoring & statistics software have already added initial support for RAMP so they might need to update them if AMD changes over to the new EXPO branding.
